Evidence Generation for Diagnostics Developers 2023
We introduced key concepts associated with evaluating new diagnostics to over 30 individuals from a variety of organisations at our training course.
On 8 and 9 November 2023 we delivered a two-day online course which introduced key concepts associated with evaluating diagnostics. We provided an overview of the portfolio of evidence that needs to be generated before new diagnostics are suitable for use on patients. As experts in this area, we also emphasised the support we can provide to diagnostics developers at these different stages.
After outlining the “evidence development pathway” for new diagnostics, during the first day, we discussed the importance of performing care pathway analysis; executing health economic evaluations; involving patients and the public in research and meeting the regulatory requirements of medical devices.
On the second day, we introduced how to examine the analytical validity, diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of new diagnostics. We also provided a practical guide to delivering a successful clinical study.
The series was also an opportunity for us to showcase our collaborations. Presenters from the NIHR Newcastle MIC team were joined by experts from the North East Innovation Lab and Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering teams at Newcastle Hospitals and the Newcastle University Population Health Sciences Institute and Stroke Research Group.
In the final session, Dr Edoardo Gaude also shared Upfront Diagnostics’ experience of developing a diagnostic for severe stroke. Dr Gaude also explained how we are helping the company generate necessary data.
