Who we are

The NIHR Newcastle In Vitro Diagnostics Co-operative (MIC) brings together the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Newcastle Hospitals) and Newcastle University.

We are one of 11 Medtech and In vitro diagnostics Co-operatives (MICs) across England awarded major funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to build capacity and expertise in the NHS.

The NIHR Newcastle MIC offers expertise in generating high quality evidence that demonstrates the potential value of a new medical test.

We have a particular focus on in vitro diagnostic tests. These are diagnostic tests performed on a clinical sample taken from the patient.

We evaluate diagnostic tests within three themes defined by huge unmet clinical need which build on the region’s world leading expertise in these areas:

  • Ageing and long-term chronic conditions
  • Infection
  • Personalised and stratified medicine

Our aim is to ensure that better diagnostics are delivered more quickly for the benefit of people in the North East, across the UK and beyond.
